The Life and Times of Sam Davis Sr.

Sunset: October 16, 1978

   Sam Davis Sr. was born to Jeff Sr. and Aurie Davis in Mexia , Texas. He grew up riding the range for his sharecropper's boss and walking the dusty hills of Mexia, Groesbeck, Limestone, and Freestone County (Texas). He attended school called, The Home School, until his intermediate years. He was baptised by the late Rev. Sam Britt, and became a devout Christian at the age of 14. He recalled many journies and adventures, but he remember his transformation to a born again Christian the best. He said, " he had been in the world  14 years already and his hands and feet looked new, the house he lived in appeared new and every since that day he had a new way of thinking, also." He discovered he was a new creature in christ, and he was called to preach the gospel.
   Then he married Estelle Smith and from this marriage eleven children were born.

Estelle passed way in childbirth. Sam moved to Houston to provide a fresh start for his family.
   He then married Lucille Davis and from this union ten children were born.

          Reginald Davis                   three others preceded him in death

After many wonderful times with his family in Loving Candy, they sold the old home front and moved to the Acres Homes area of Houston in 1949 to raise thier children.
   He founded and built a church, Rebecca Baptist Church, on James Franklin St.  After preaching at many churches in and out of town, he pastored in   Hempstead and Navasota. He past away after his many years of dedicated service to the church.  
  Sam shared many of his life stories with his family. He left his family and friends with these words, "Stay with the church and the family reunions, because a family that prays together, stay together. For the family reunion, is the picture of heaven on earth."
